Janick Gers (Gillan/Iron Maiden)

Name: Janick Robert Gers
Born: 27th January 1957 (Hartlepool, England)

Profile: He is an English musician, best known for his work with "Gillan" and as one of three current guitarists in "Iron Maiden" and a songwriter for the band.

History: Gers started to play guitar after the influence of "Deep Purple's" lead guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, and wanted to start his own band ever since. Though he is left handed, he tried to play guitar right handed as his guitar hero and even played a Fender Strat guitar and used a lot of Pentatonic and Blues scales.

In the late 70's, Gers was the lead guitarist of the band "White Spirit" before joining "Gillan" (early in the 80's), a group formed by former "Deep Purple" vocalist Ian Gillan. After "Gillan" disbanded, he joined "Gogmagog" which included former "Iron Maiden" vocalist Paul Di'Anno and drummer Clive Burr, in 1985 and released an EP 'I Will Be There'. Gers also performed with other artists including former "Marillion" vocalist Fish.

In 1990, he played guitar on the first solo album of "Iron Maiden" vocalist Bruce Dickinson, 'Tattooed Millionaire'. During the recording of the album, he was asked to join "Iron Maiden" in place of departing guitarist Adrian Smith. He has remained with the band ever since, even after Smith rejoined the band in 1999.

Gers' playing style uses heavy distortion and is noted for having a very raw tone. He prefers staccato picking instead of playing legato using hammer-ons and pull-offs.

Eva Fampas

Name: Eva Fampas
Born: 4th June, 1964 (Athens, Greece)

Profile: She is a Greek guitarist and a music teacher. She was described as 'a great musical personality' by Morning Talk Newspaper. Fampas is also regarded as one of the world's most gifted artists, with performances noted for coupling deep musicality, passion and an exceptional virtuosity.

History: Fampas was born into a musical family and started playing the guitar very young under the instruction of her father Dimitri Fampas, the very famous Greek composer, guitarist and professor. Her first participation in concert was at the age of 12, with the D. Fampas' famous guitar school.

Fampas was a brilliant graduate of the National Conservatory of Athens, she studied with outstanding professors such as; Dimitris Dragatakis (composer), Theodore Antoniou (composer-maestro), Leo Brouwer (guitarist-composer), master-classes given by: Ruggero Chiesa, Robert Vidal, John Duarte and Pepe Romero.

In 1981, Fampas won at first place on the 16th International Guitar competition (Guitar Academy of Milan), followed by a medal by Athens Municipality in 1984, for her participation in the celebrations-Athens 150 years capital of Greece - organized by the Greek Writers' Association and the Cultural Center of Athens Municipality.

Fampas has performed hundreds of recitals and concerts in more than 25 countries in Europe, Asia, America Latina and Africa with great success, she maintains a very active concert schedule and she is in great demand as a recitalist, soloist, chamber musician and pedagogue. Newspapers, magazines, National and International TV and radio stations around the world have honored her accomplishments with portraits, interviews and extensive articles.

In 2004, Fampas premiered the FOR EVA guitar concerto by Yiu-Kwong Chung and the Baiao Lunar, two new works dedicated to her, with Athens State Orchestra conducted by Costis Papazoglou at the MELINA Athens' cultural center. In 2008, she premiered the orchestrated by Andersen Viana, GREEK SUITE with the Athens Municipality Symphony Orchestra conducted by Michalis Economou at the Byzantine Museum of Athens. This concert was repeated at the Technopolis cultural centre of Athens due to the great success of the premiere and to audience's demand.

Her virtuoso repertoire, very melodic and exciting, with traditional, ethnic and contemporary influences, includes a substantial amount of works by Greek composers as well as music from the Baroque era to the present century. Her passionate and powerful interpretations of Greek music frequently receive ovations from both the press and the audiences.

In addition to her other activities she is frequently invited to be member of the jury in guitar competitions as well as in competitions for compositions for guitar, to give lectures and master-classes in Academic Conferences, Musical Institutions and Guitar festivals around the world. Presently she reworks and supervises the publication of Dimitris Fampas' guitar music books. She is also the author/composer of the educational book - melodic lessons, the most joyful guitar method for children and of various award winning short pieces for children.

Eva Fampas is the Founder and President of the Guitar Friends' Association DIMITRI FAMPAS, a non profit cultural society, which is dedicated to serving her father personality and music, to celebrate guitar excellence and to encourage and promote young talented guitarists and the Greek music.

Filomena Moretti

Name: Filomena Moretti
Born: 1973 (Sassari, Italy)

Profile: She is an Italian classical guitarist, graduated from the Sassari Conservatoire and was awarded the first prize.

History: Moretti was given her first guitar when she was 5. It was love at first sight and the passion grew with the years. Early learning and practice with the masters, something she never stopped doing – to this day she follows Julian Bream’s guidance.

In the early 80's, she continued her studies with Ruggero Chiesa, and won several international competitions; Premier Prix at the Competition Cagliari (1991), Second Prix at the International Competition of Sassari (1992), Second Prix at the Competition Fernando Sor de Rome (1993) and Premier Prix at the Competition de l’A.R.A.M (1996).

In 1993, she obtained a grant to pursue her studies with Oscar Ghihlia at the Chiagana Academy in Sienne, and took part in several master-classes with A. Diaz, D. Russel, J. Bream, J. Tomas and M. Barrueco. After her studies, Moretti performed with leading orchestras. Her extensive repertoire includes the most important guitar and orchestras concertos.

In 1999, she toured Italy with the renowned Lucero Tena, and was also invited by the Verdi Conservatoire in Milan. In June 1999, she performed the Giuliani Concerto with the "Societa dei Concerti" at the Verdi Conservatoire in Milan. In France, she has appeared at the TransClassiques at La Cigale in Paris, at the Flâneries Musicales in Reims, at the Festivals de Radio France in Montpellier, at the Young Soloist Festival in Antibes. Her concerts have been broadcasted on Muzzik and Mezzo TV channels. She has also been invited by FRANCE 2 channel.

Moretti has recorded two CD's for Phoenix and Stradivarius labels. The released of the Integral for solo guitar by Joaquin Rodrigo under the Stradivarius label, Moretti caused her to be on the front page of the Italian magazine Classica. In 1998, she received the 'Golden Guitar' for her recording of Fernando Sor under the Stradivarius label. For Transart UK label, she recorded two volumes of J.S. Bach's lute works transcribed for guitar

With her warm and deep sounds, the richness and variety of her musical palette and her skilful transpositions, Moretti already demonstrated at the Théâtre des Abbesses how she could wrench us from ourselves; she created a unique fusion between interpreter and audience. Beside transpositions of pieces by Scarlatti and Bach, she will play scores by Italian composer Regondi, by Mertz the Austrian, Mangoré the Paraguayan and Fernand Sor the Spaniard.

David Gilmour (Pink Floyd)

Name: David Jon Gilmour
Born: 6th March, 1946 (Cambrige, England)

Profile: He is an English rock musician, best known as the lead guitarist, one of the lead singers, and one of the main songwriters in the progressive rock band "Pink Floyd". In addition to his work with "Pink Floyd", Gilmour has worked as a record producer for a variety of artists, and has enjoyed a successful career as a solo artist.

History: Gilmour attended The Perse School on Hills Road, Cambridge, and met future "Pink Floyd" guitarist and vocalist Syd Barret, along with bassist and vocalist Roger Waters. Gilmore studied modern languages along with Barrett, and spent his lunchtime learning to play the guitar. They were not yet bandmates however, and Gilmour started playing in the band "Joker's Wild" in 1962.

In 1966, Gilmour left "Joker's Wild" and busked around Spain and France with some friends. However, they were not very successful, living virtually a hand-to-mouth existence, and about a year later he returned back to England.

In 1967, Gilmour was approached by drummer Nick Mason, who asked if he would be interested in joining "Pink Floyd", which he did in January 1968, making "Pink Floyd" briefly a five-piece band. He was used to fill in for Syd Barrett's guitar parts when the front man was unable to take a consistent part in "Pink Floyd's" live performances.

When Syd Barrett left the group, Gilmour by default assumed the role of the band's lead guitarist and shared lead vocal duties with bassist Roger Waters and keyboard player Richard Wright in Barrett's stead. After recording 'Animals' album, Gilmour thought that his musical influence had been underused, and channeled his ideas into his self-titled first solo album in 1978, which showcases his signature guitar style, as well as underscoring his songwriting skills.

Gilmour's solo style is often characterized by blues-influenced phrasing, expressive note bends and sustain. He is also a proficient multi-instrumentalist. He plays bass guitar (which he did on some "Pink Floyd" tracks), keyboards, banjo, harmonica, drums (as heard on the Syd Barrett solo track 'Dominoes', and other songs where he opted to play all the instruments) and lately, the saxophone.

Taking time off from "Pink Floyd's" schedule, Gilmour also took up various roles as a producer, sideman and even concert sound engineer for a wide variety of acts which included former bandmate Syd Barrett, Paul McCartney (The Beatles), Kate Bush, Grace Jones, Tom Jones, Elton John, Eric Clapton, BB King, Seal, Sam Brown, Jools Holland, Bob Dylan, Pete Townshend, The Who, Supertramp, Levon Helm, Robbie Robertson, Alan Parsons, and various charity groups among others.

In 1985, Gilmour was member of Bryan Ferry's band. He played on Ferry's album 'Boys & Girls', as well as the song 'Is Your Love Strong Enough' for the US release of the Ridley Scott-Tom Cruise film 'Legend'. A music video for the latter was created, incorporating Ferry and Gilmour into footage from the film. He also took part in a comedy skit titled 'The Easy Guitar Book Sketch' with comedian Rowland Rivron and fellow British musicians Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits), Lemmy (Motorhead), Mark King (Level 42) and Gary Moore.

In 1994, Gilmour played guitar for the video game 'Tuneland', along with the additional saxophonist for "Pink Floyd", Scott Page. In 2001-2002, Gilmour held a small number of acoustic solo concerts in London and Paris, along with a small band and choir, which was documented on the In Concert release. In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine included Gilmour in the list of hundred greatest guitarists of all time.

Christopher Amott (Arch Enemy/Armageddon)

Name: Christopher Amott
Born: 23rd November, 1977 (Halmstad, Sweden)

Profile: He is a Swedish guitarist, vocalist and younger brother of guitarist Michael Amott (Carcass) and founding member of the Swedish metal bands "Arch Enemy" and "Armageddon".

History: Inspired by his older brother Michael Amott's band "Carcass", Christopher began studying the guitar at 14, playing in local bands, and eventually attending music college at age 18. His style of playing consist of aggressive, fast vibrato, speedy alternate-picking and fluid lead lines.

While attending music school in 1996, Amott's brother Michael asked him to record solos for his new melodic death metal project "Arch Enemy". The 'Black Earth' album was released in Japan, and was an instant hit, receiving regular airplay on Japanese MTV. In 1997, the band were invited to play in Japan, and it was there that Amott secured a deal for his "Armageddon" side project. The project began as a melodic death metal band, similar in style to "Arch Enemy", but with a more conceptual feel to the lyrics. "Armageddon" released their first debut album 'Crossing the Rubicon' in 1997.

In 1999, with "Arch Enemy" gaining ground worldwide, Amott would go on to release 'Burning Bridges' and 'Burning Japan Live 1999', then take a break until the later part of 2000, when "Armageddon" released their second album 'Embrace the Mystery' in Japan. This time featuring a melodic singer, and more of an overall power metal feel, the album was a drastic shift from the straight ahead melodic death metal, and marked Amott's desire to branch out of the extreme metal genre.

In 2001, "Arch Enemy" were joined by new singer Angela Gossow, and the band reached new heights in worldwide popularity with the release of 'Wages of Sin'. After completing an extensive world tour with "Arch Enemy", Amott returned to his "Armageddon" project, and released 'Three' in 2002. This album featured Amott as lead vocals. In 2005, "Arch Enemy" released, 'Doomsday Machine', but immediately after the recording, Amott left the band.

He now spent the next two years teaching music in Sweden, as well as attending a university. In 2010, Amott revealed that he would be releasing a solo album early in the year entitled 'Follow Your Heart'.

Michael Amott (Carcass/Arch Enemy)

Name: Michael Amott
Born: 28th July, 1970 (London, England)

Profile: He is a Swedish guitarist, songwriter, founding member of the bands "Arch Enemy", "Spiritual Beggars", and "Carnage", as well as a member of the death metal band "Carcass". He is the older brother of Christopher Amott.

History: Amott began playing guitar as a young teenager, learning to play by copying Punk/Hardcore and Thrash/Speed Metal out of his record collection. he soon went to a new level with his playing. He has stated in guitar magazines that he has a preference for pentatonics scales, and his soloing style is frequently compared to that of Michael Schenker.

In 1988, Amott co-formed the death metal band "Carnage" with singer Johan Liiva, and released two widely traded cassette demos, gaining instant underground interest. Plagued by constant lineup changes, "Carnage" would eventually record their only album 'Dark Recollections'. In 1990, Amott was recruited by "Carcass", and released the album 'Necroticism - Descanting the Insalubrious' a year later, followed by, 'Heartwork', the album which help to define what is now known as melodic death metal.

In 1993, he left "Carcass" and decided to form a classic rock influenced band, "Spiritual Beggars". The band released their debut album a year later, which led to an European record deal with Music for Nations.

Still heavily into extreme metal, Amott formed a new melodic death metal project in the same vein as "Carcass", and he contacted original "Carnage" vocalist Johan Liiva, as well as his younger brother Christopher Amott and put together "Arch Enemy". The band's first album 'Black Earth' was originally intended to be a one-off project, but in 1997, the album's first single, 'Bury Me An Angel' received unexpected airplay on Japan's MTV Rocks! program.

In 2003, "Arch Enemy" released 'Anthems of Rebellion', and for the first time, their received US MTV airplay with the video for 'We Will Rise'. The band would reach new heights in popularity worldwide, and toured constantly until the release of 2005's 'Doomsday Machine'. Amott returned once again to "Spiritual Beggars" in 2005, releasing the album 'Demons'. He also recently performed a guest guitar solo on "The Haunted" and "Kreator".

Today, Amott is busy touring the world and recording with "Arch Enemy" and the re-formed "Carcass", and he does not rule out a return to "Spiritual Beggars" in the future.

Miki Berenyi (Lush)

Name: Miki Berenyi
Born: 18th March, 1967 (London, UK)

Profile: She is a singer, songwriter and guitarist. She was the lead singer of now disbanded group "Lush". She is mixed Japanese and Hungarian parentage, and currently she works for a magazine as a sub-editor.

History: Berenyi actually did not learn guitar formally, she just started to play guitar after forming "Lush" in 1988. At the age of 14, Berenyi met her friend and future bandmate, Emma Anderson. They became interested in music and together wrote the music fanzine 'Alphabet Soup'. Berenyi first music instrument was bass guitar while she was with the band, "The Bugs" and later went on to play with "I-Goat", "Fuhrer Five", and "the Lillies".

In 1988, Berenyi studied English literature at North London Polytechnic, where she met Emma Anderson (guitar) and Meriel Barham (vocal), and they decided to form their own band. When Barham left, the remaining members of "Lush" placed ads in local papers looking for Barham's replacement, but they could not find the singer they wanted, and Berenyi took over the vocals.

By 1990's, "Lush" supported opening tours for "Loop" and the "Darling Buds". Throughout those year, the band's reputation in the British music press began to grow as they released the acclaimed EP's 'Mad Love' and 'Sweetness and Light', played high-profile gigs like the 'Glastonbury Festival', and became favorites of the music weeklies' gossip columns.

'Gala', an album compiling their three EPs, became the band's first American release at the end of 1990. "Lush" spent most of 1991 recording their debut album, releasing the 'Black Spring' EP in the spring and their debut album, 'Spooky' in 1992, reaching the British Top Ten and topping the U.K. indie charts.

After "Lush" disbanded, Berenyi appeared as guest on "The Rentals" album 'Seven More Minutes'. Miki has also contributed vocals to a remix of a 'Flat 7' track by Robin Guthrie and appearing on four tracks as a guest vocalist for "Seinking Ships" on their debut album released in 2008.

Emma Anderson (Lush/Sing-Sing)

Name: Emma Anderson
Born: 10th June, 1967 (Wimbledon, London, England)

Profile: She is an English musician, best known for being a songwriter, guitarist and backing singer in the Britpop band "Lush". As a keen music fan, she used to write a fanzine called 'Alphabet Soup' with school friend Miki Berenyi when she was a teenager.

History: She started to play guitar in the 70's and attended 'Ealing College of Higher Education' in London where she first joined a band called "The Rover Girls" as a bass player.

In 1988, she formed "Lush" with friend and fellow song writer, Miki Berenyi. In "Lush", she played as a lead guitarist, and played their very first performance at 'Camden Falcon' in London. They went on to reasonable success, having a number of Top 40 hits over an 8 year career.

Both Anderson and Berenyi became major music press celebrities. 'NME' and 'Melody Maker' magazine gleefully reported their social activities on a regular basis, which could be said to overshadow their increasingly strong songwriting.

After their biggest hits, the Top 30 'Single Girl', 'Ladykillers' and '500 (Shake Baby Shake)' and Top 10 album, 'Lovelife' in 1996, the band disbanded officially on February 1997 due to personal reasons.

In 1997, Anderson formed a new band with vocalist Lisa O'Neill, "Sing-Sing". They released two albums - 'The Joy of Sing-Sing' in 2001 and 'Sing-Sing and I' in 2005, before officially disbanding on New Year's Day 2008.

Anderson currently resides in Brighton, with her daughter, and still works in the music industry.

Heather Nova

Name: Heather Nova
Born: 6th July, 1967 (Bermuda)

Profile: She is a singer-songwriter and poet. She has released seven full-length albums and has found lasting success in Germany where two of her albums 'South' and 'Storm' have made their way into the Top-5 of German official album chart.

History: Nova started playing guitar and violin at an early age, writing her first song when she was 12. Her family relocated to New England where she attended the Putney School in Putney, Vermont. Following her graduation in 1983, Nova enrolled at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), where she majored in film in 1989. She also sat in on poetry classes and wrote music to go with her student films. Later, she would forgo film study to focus on creating music.

After graduating from RISD, Nova briefly relocated to New York City (where she unsuccessfully tried to interest some major labels in a demo), before moving to London. In 1990, she released her first recording, 'Heather Frith', an EP; she had not yet changed her name. The name change came a year or so later, in an effort to create a name with more buzz.

The new name debuted in 1993 with her second EP 'Spirit in You' and her first full album, the critically acclaimed 'Glow Stars'. The success of the album led her to record and release her first live album 'Blow' the same year, which she supported by a tour of Europe.

In 1994, she released what many consider to be her finest work to date, the emotional yet jagged album 'Oyster', for which she toured for almost 2 years. 'Siren', the long-awaited album was released in 1998, after which she joined Sarah McLachlan and others on the 'North American Lilith Fair', a music festival with only female performers.

Over the years, Nova has written and recorded over 100 songs. With the release of 'South' in 2001, she returned to the international spotlight with an appearance on the soundtrack of the John Cusack movie 'Serendipity', the album followed by 'Storm' in 2003, 'Redbird' in 2005 and 'The Jasmine Flower' in 2008.

She also collaborated with the German trance artist ATB on tracks like 'Love Will Find You', 'Feel You Like A River' and 'Renegade'.

Steve Harris (Iron Maiden)

Name: Stephen Percy Harris
Born: 12th March, 1956 (Leytonstone, London, England)

Profile: He is an English musician, best known as the bassist, band leader, primary songwriter and only constant member of the heavy metal band "Iron Maiden", in addition, he plays keyboards, and sings backing vocals.

History: Originally Harris wanted to play drums or be a professional football player; however he did not have much space for a drum kit in his house so he started to play bass and write songs. Harris is a self-taught bass player, his first bass was a copy of a Fender Precision Bass that cost him £40 when he was 17 years old. He went on to use a signature Lado 'Unicorn' model and an early 70's Fender Precision bass.

Harris joined numerous bands such as "Influence", "Gypsy's Kiss" and "Smiler". He ended up leaving "Smiler", as the members of the band made it clear that they did not care for a bassist who leapt around the stage and wrote songs, also his songs were too complicated for the band members, with the result that they did not want to play them, after "Smiler", Harris went on to create "Iron Maiden".

Harris is "Iron Maiden's" principal composer and lyricist. Syd Barrett (Pink Floyd)

Name: Roger Keith Barrett
Born/Died: 6th January, 1946 (Cambridge, England) - 7th July, 2006

Profile: He was an English singer, songwriter, guitarist and artist. He is most remembered as a founding member of psychedelic rock band "Pink Floyd", providing major musical and stylistic direction in their early work.

History: His parents encourage him in his music when he was just 3 years old. Barrett acquired the nickname 'Syd' at the age of 14, a reference to an old local Cambridge jazz Double Bassist, Sid Barrett. He then changed the spelling in order to differentiate himself from his namesake.

Barrett formed his first band "The Mottoes", where his mother encouraged his band to perform in their front room, Barrett and Roger Waters were childhood friends, and Waters often visited such gigs. During this time he wrote such songs as "Effervescing Elephant" to play at local parties.

In 1965, Barrett joined a band called "The Tea Set", when they found themselves playing a concert with a band of the same name, Barrett came up with the name "The Pink Floyd Sound" (later "The Pink Floyd"). He devised the name "Pink Floyd" by juxtaposing the first names of Pink Anderson and Floyd Council whom he had read about in a sleeve note by Paul Oliver for a 1962 Blind Boy Fuller LP.

In 1966, "Pink Floyd" had gained a reliable management team in Andrew King and Peter Jenner (who took their original songs to the recording behemoth EMI), soon after that the band was offered a contract for an album. By the time the album was released, 'Arnold Layne' had reached number 20 on the British singles charts and 'See Emily Play', had done even better, peaking at number 6.

Their first three singles, including their third 'Apples and Oranges', were all written by Barrett, who also was the principal visionary/author of their critically acclaimed 1967 debut album, 'The Piper at the Gates of Dawn'.

In 1972, after a few guest spots in Cambridge with former "Pink Fairies" members Twink and Jack Monck, the trio formed a short-lived band called "Stars". Though the band was initially well received, one of their gigs at the Corn Exchange in Cambridge proved to be disastrous. A few days after this final show, Twink recalled that Barrett stopped him on the street, showed him a scathing review of the gig they had played, and quit on the spot.

After leaving "Pink Floyd", he was to record the poignant solo albums 'The Madcap Laughs' and 'Barrett', but otherwise was reclusive and was to suffer a continuing history of mental ill health.

Barrett was active as a rock musician for about seven years, recording two albums with "Pink Floyd" and two solo albums before going into self-imposed seclusion lasting more than 30 years. His post rock-band life was as an artist and a keen gardener, ending with his death in 2006. A number of biographies have been written about him since the 80's and "Pink Floyd" wrote and recorded a classic song about him after he left, 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' on the 1975 album 'Wish You Were Here'.

Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits)

Name: Mark Knopfler
Born: 12th August, 1949 (Glasgow, Scotland)

Profile: He is a British guitarist, singer, songwriter, record producer and film score composer. He is best known as the lead guitarist, vocalist and songwriter for the British rock band "Dire Straits".

History: At the age of 7, he and his younger brother David attended 'Gosforth Grammar School', where he was inspired by his uncle Kingsley's harmonica and boogie-woogie piano playing. Later, in his teens, he wanted to buy an expensive Fiesta Red Fender Stratocaster just like Hank Marvin's, but had to settle for a £50 twin-pick-up Höfner Super Solid.

During the 60's, he formed and joined anonymous schoolboy bands. At age 16, he made a local TV appearance as half of a harmony duo along with a friend from school named Sue Hercombe. In 1969, he worked as a part-time lecturer at 'Loughton College' and played with mates in a band called the "Café Racers", during this period. He also played in a few bands such as the "Silver Heels" and "Brewers Droop".

One night while spending some time with friends, the only guitar available was an old acoustic with a badly warped neck that had been strung with extra-light strings to make it playable. Even so, he found it impossible to play unless he finger-picked it. He said, 'That was where I found my "voice" on guitar.'

Knopfler then joined brother David in a band and also found himself another musical partner, John Illsley (initially a guitarist who changed over to bass) and became the only other member of "Dire Straits" to figure throughout the band's career.

Sam Totman (DragonForce)

Name: Ian Samuel Totman

Profile: He is a guitarist and main songwriter for the power metal band "DragonForce". A great guitar player with plenty of feelings in both rhythm and leads.

History: He began playing classical guitar at the age of 9 with formal musical training for many years. When he was 15, he started to have interest in Rock & Metal music, soon he got his first electric guitar.

In 1993, he was part of the blackened power metal band "Demoniac" in New Zealand, during this time, the band struggled to achieve real fame at all despite albums and re-locating to London. Due to this departure, the band split sometime in late 1999, shortly after the album 'The Fire and the Wind' was released.

Totman and some of the former "Demoniac" members went on to form power metal band "DragonHeart", which later became known as "DragonForce". Keyboardist Steve Williams and bassist Steve Scott left "DragonHeart" to form "Power Quest" with whom Totman recorded on their demo and first album, 'Wings of Forever'. Sam also provided guest instrumentation on the band's following album, 'Neverworld'.

Totman is the primary songwriter of "DragonForce", writing both music and lyrics for a majority of their discography. He is also known for his energetic live performances, as he usually pulls off several stunts, such as 'Tornado Split Jump'

Profile: He is a musician, best known as a founding member, rhythm guitarist, backing vocalist and songwriter for the Australian hard rock band AC/DC. He has been with them since he co-founded the band in November 1973, apart from a brief absence in 1988. Malcolm has been described as the business and brains behind AC/DC. As the rhythm guitarist, he is responsible for the broad sweep of AC/DC's sound, developing many of the band's guitar riffs and co-writing the band's material.

History: Malcolm started learning guitar in an early age (back in those days, Melcolm's guitar was always played by his brother Angus without him knowing), he first played with a New South Wales band called "The Velvet Underground" playing cover versions of "T. Rex" and "The Rolling Stones" songs. After playing gigs with "The Velvet Underground" in most clubs, he and Angus formed AC/DC in 1973 and toured with singer Dave Evans a year later.

Guitar Player magazine has stated that the secret to Malcolm Young's guitar technique is playing open chords through a series of medium-sized amplifiers set to low volume with little or no gain. This is contrary to a common belief of rock guitarists that rhythm guitar should involve loud and overdriven power chords through large amplifiers.

Angus Young (AC/DC)

Name: Angus McKinnon Young
Born: 31st March, 1955 (Glasgow, Scotland)

Profile: He is a Scottish-born Australian musician and the lead guitarist, songwriter and co-founder of the rock and roll band "AC/DC". He is known for his wild, energetic performances, schoolboy-uniform stage outfits and the duck walk.

History: Angus first started playing on banjos but re-strung them with six strings. By the time he was 11, Angus had flirted with a tutorial course, but he preferred to learn by himself and most of his musical education was pure trial and error. In the beginning, Angus messed around with Malcolm Young's (brother) guitars for years before his mother finally bought him his own, a cheap little acoustic. At 16, a year prior to leaving school Angus had been practicing guitar almost constantly, jamming around with friends and playing at school dances.

As a teenager, he played in a band called 'Kantuckee'. He was 18 when he and his Malcolm formed AC/DC in 1973 with Angus on lead guitar, Malcolm on rhythm guitar, Colin Burgess on drums, Rob Bailey on bass guitar and Dave Evans on vocals (later replaced by Bon Scott). Angus tried a number of stage costumes, such as Spider-Man, Zorro, a gorilla, and a parody of Superman, named Super-Ang, before settling on his signature schoolboy look.

While AC/DC never strayed far from their original musical path, record and ticket sales continued to increase with each successive album and tour. With massive global success beckoning, AC/DC overcame a career-threatening tragedy in 1980 when Scott died from alcohol poisoning. But his replacement, Brian Johnson, fit in perfectly, as the group immediately issued their biggest hit of their entire career, the classic "Back in Black".

Most rock fans would agree that AC/DC guitarist Angus Young is one of the genre's most energetic and entertaining performers. It's impossible to imagine an AC/DC show without Angus bobbing his head up and down in time to the music, playing Chuck Berry's licks on his Gibson SG guitar, shirtless and drenched in sweat. And in addition to his manic stage persona, he's one of the best rock guitarists of all time.

Pete Townshend (The Who)

Name: Peter Dennis Blandford Townshend
Born: 19th May, 1945 (London, England)

Profile: He is an English rock guitarist, keyboardist, vocalist, songwriter and author, known principally as the guitarist and songwriter for "The Who", as well as for his own solo career. His career with "The Who" spans more than 40 years, during which time the band grew to be considered one of the most influential bands of the rock era. Townshend has also been a contributor and author of newspaper and magazine articles, book reviews, essays, books, and scripts, as well as collaborating as a lyricist (and composer) for many other musical acts.

History: Born into a musical family, his father was a professional saxophonist in "The Squadronaires" and his mother was a singer, Townshend exhibited a fascination with music at an early age. In the mid 50's, he was drawn to American rock and roll. When he was 12, his grandmother gave him his first guitar, a single pickup Harmony Stratocruiser. He did, however, learn the banjo joining a traditional jazz band "The Confederates" playing with John Entwistle as trumpet.

From this beginning Townshend and Entwistle joined "The Detours", the lead guitarist Roger Daltrey at the time, sold him an Epiphone. In 1964, they renamed "The Detours" to "The Who". The band comprising Daltrey on vocals, Townshend on guitar, Entwistle on bass guitar and Moon on drums. The band raw and high-energy music, strongly influenced by American R&B, reflected the youthful frustration of their generation and became synonymous with the mod movement.

Townshend was to channel his self-expression through the group's overall sound, the songs he wrote for them, his rhythm guitar and his on-stage image. This separated him from most of his peers; Eric Clapton, for example, were very much lead guitarist. Townshend was not. Frustrated because he was unable to get the kind of sounds that Clapton could, he discovered his own solution.

One night, while he was on stage at a club in West London, he accidentally put the head of his guitar (a Rickenbacker) through the false ceiling above him, snapping off the neck. When the audience started to laugh, he smashed the rest of the guitar to pieces, picked up a 12-string guitar and continued to play for the rest of the show as if nothing had happened. Subsequently, ritualistic equipment-smashing became the climax of many of "The Who's" stage and television appearances.

By this time, Townshend, the inventor of the 'rock power chord' and a pioneer user of controlled feedback, had developed a unique playing style. Laced with on stage acrobatics and his trademark (windmilling arm motions), it provided a solid, powerful foundation for the rest of the band.

George Harrison (The Beatles)

Name: George Harrison
Born/Died: 25th February, 1943 (Liverpool, England) - 29th November 2001

Profile: He was an English rock guitarist, singer-songwriter and film producer who achieved international fame as lead guitarist in "The Beatles". Often referred to as "the quiet Beatle". Following the band's breakup, he had a successful career as a solo artist and later as part of the supergroup "Traveling Wilburys", and also as a film and record producer. He was a close friend of Eric Clapton.

History: When Harrison was 14 years old, he bought a Dutch Egmond flat top acoustic guitar and learned the instrument seriously. While at the Liverpool Institute, he formed a group called "The Rebels". At this school he met bassist Paul McCartney, who played in a band called "The Quarrymen" and joined McCartney's band soon after.

Harrison became part of "The Beatles" when McCartney told John Lennon about his friend George Harrison, who could play 'Raunchy' on his guitar. Although Lennon considered him too young to join the band, Harrison hung out with them and filled in as needed. By the time he was 16, Lennon and the others had accepted him as one of the band.

Harrison left school at 16 and worked as an apprentice electrician at local department store for a while. When "The Beatles" were offered work in Hamburg in 1960, the musical apprenticeship that Harrison received playing long hours at the Kaiserkeller with the rest of the group, including guitar lessons from Tony Sheridan, laid the foundations of "The Beatles" sound.

When Brian Epstein became "The Beatles" manager in December 1961, he changed their image from that of leather-jacketed rock-and-rollers to a more polished look and secured them a recording contract with EMI. The first single, "Love Me Do", saw Harrison playing a Gibson J-160E, "The Beatles" had become famous and Beatlemania had arrived.

The popularity of "The Beatles" led to a successful tour of America. Harrison, whose role within the group was that of the careful musician who checked that the instruments were tuned, was developing into a musical director as he led the others into folk-rock, via his interest in "The Byrds and Bob Dylan" and into Indian music with his exploration of the sitar.

Harrison's guitar work with the Beatles was varied, flexible and innovative; although not fast or flashy, his guitar playing was solid and typified the more subdued lead guitar style of the early 60's. Harrison explored several guitar instruments, the twelve-string, the sitar and the slide guitar, and developed his playing from tight eight-bar and twelve-bar solos in such songs as "A Hard Day's Night" and "Can't Buy Me Love", to lyrical slide guitar playing.

Slash (Guns N' Roses/Velvet Revolver)

Name: Saul Hudson
Born: 23rd July, 1965 (Stoke-on-Trent, England)

Profile: He is a British-American musician. Best-known as the former lead guitarist of the hard rock band "Guns N' Roses" (GNR), with whom he performed and recorded between 1985 and 1996, he later formed the eponymous "Slash's Snakepit" and co-founded "Velvet Revolver" with his former bandmates.

History: As a young boy, Slash was influenced by a musical school teacher who had a Gibson Les Paul guitar and was always playing "Cream" and "Led Zeppelin" songs, he straight away wanted to be a guitarist.

After deciding to form a band with friend Steven Adler, Slash decided to pick up the bass guitar as Adler had declared himself lead guitarist. Slash stopped in at Fairfax Music School and told the receptionist he wanted to play the bass, and at that time met his teacher who told him that in order to learn he would need a bass of his own. Slash went home and asked his grandmother and was given a worn-out, single stringed flamenco guitar. After hearing his teacher play "Brown Sugar" by ear, Slash realized that the guitar was his calling.

In 1983, Slash formed the band "Road Crew", a Motörhead tribute band, with childhood friend Steven Adler. He placed an advertisement in a newspaper for a bassist, and received a response from Duff McKagan. When "Road Crew" disbanded, Slash joined a local band known as "Black Sheep", the band shared an agent with another new group known as "Hollywood Rose".

In 1984, both bands opened for "Stryper". After the show, Slash and lead singer Axl Rose were introduced to one another by a friend. The two quickly became friends, and several months later, Slash and Steven Adler were invited to join with Axl Rose, Duff McKagan and Izzy Stradlin as the band "Guns N' Roses (GNR)".

After his departure from "GNR", Slash focused on his side-project, Snakepit, playing a few tour dates before disbanding the group in 1998. Over the next decade, Slash became an in-demand session musician, recording music with the likes of Alice Cooper, Sammy Hagar, Insane Clown Posse, Ronnie Wood, Bad Company, Cheap Trick, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson.

In 2002, he reunited with Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum for a tribute concert. Realizing they still had the chemistry of their days in "GNR", they decided to form a new band together. The band that featured Slash, McKagan, and Sorum also featured former Stone Temple Pilots singer Scott Weiland and "Velvet Revolver" was born.

Nuno Bettencourt (Extreme)

Name: Nuno Duarte Gil Mendes Bettencourt
Born: 20th September, 1966 (Praia da Vitória, Terceira, Azores, Portugal)

Profile: He is a Portuguese guitarist and singer-songwriter best known for his role as the lead guitarist of the Boston hard rock band "Extreme" whose hits include the acoustic ballads "More Than Words" and "Hole Hearted".

History: Nuno grew up in a very musical family. Initially, he had little interest in music, preferring to spend his time on sports. His first instrument was the drums, bass and keyboards, he played them exclusively until his brother, Luis, began to teach him how to play guitar.

While Nuno was slow to adopt the instrument under his brother's tutelage, his skills quickly developed when he began teaching himself, practicing upwards of 7 hours a day. In his junior years of high school, Nuno dropped out of sports so he could focus on playing guitar.

In mid 80's he formed a metal band called "Sinful" - unable to make a dent in the music world he then left the band and in 1985, he joined "Extreme" and released the band's debut album in 1989, which rose him to international prominence as a guitar player.

In 1990, "Extreme" released their most critically acclaimed album, Pornograffitti, which included the hits "More Than Words" and "Hole Hearted". The band followed it with III Sides to Every Story in 1992. Nuno composed and arranged the brass and string sections for this album and the full orchestra on III Sides to Every Story. In 1996, "Extreme" disbanded after releasing the album, Waiting for the Punchline, - when Nuno expressed his desire to follow a solo career.

He has since recorded a solo project called Schizophonic as well as with bands he founded including "Mourning Widows", "Population 1", "DramaGods" and "The Satellite Party". In 2007, he reunited with "Extreme" to record new music and tour with the original line up (with the exception of drummer Paul Geary).

Since 1990, Nuno has had his own line of custom guitars designed by Washburn Guitars. His line is known as the N-Series, and is currently promoting the Washburn N4.

Gary Moore

Name: Robert William Gary Moore
Born: 4th April, 1952 (Belfast, Northern Ireland)

Profile: He is a Northern Irish guitarist and singer. In a career dating back to the 1960s, Moore has played with artists including Thin Lizzy, B.B. King, Colosseum II, Greg Lake and the blues-rock band Skid Row (not the glam metal band), as well as having a successful solo career.

History: He started performing at a young age, having picked up a battered acoustic guitar at the age of 8. Moore got his first quality guitar at the age of 14, learning to play the right-handed instrument in the standard way despite being left-handed, he was turned on to rock and roll first through hearing Elvis Presley, and then via "The Beatles". Seeing the likes of Jimi Hendrix and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers in his hometown in the mid 60's opened up to him the rich world of The Blues.

In 1969, Moore joined the group "Skid Row". It was with this group that Moore earned a reputation in the music industry, and his association with Phil Lynott began. In 1973, Moore released his first solo album "Grinding Stone" and was billed as the Gary Moore Band. In 1978 his solo career continued with the help from Phil Lynott.

In 1987, Moore collaborated on the UK charity record "Let It Be", a cover of "The Beatles" track. Moore performed a guitar solo for inclusion on the recording. The record raised substantial funds for the survivors of the MS Herald of Free Enterprise disaster.

After a series of rock records, Moore returned to blues music with "Still Got the Blues" album, with contributions from Albert King, Albert Collins and George Harrison (The Beatles). The album was well received by fans and a huge success. In 2004, he released "Power of the Blues" album, following "Old New Ballads Blues" in 2006, "Close As You Get" in 2007 and his most recent album "Bad For You Baby" in 2008.
